Under the impact of novel coronavirus pneumonia, Aldel, an aluminium smelter in Delfzijl, Holland, is cutting 60-70 jobs.
A spokesman for Adel confirmed the news that the spread of covid-19 has reduced the demand for the company's aluminum products.
However, aluminum smelters are faced with high electricity price and high production cost at the same time. The spokesman said the adjustment is expected to affect about 20% of employees.
After that, the company will negotiate with the trade union on follow-up matters. This period of uncertainty is expected to continue until early 2021.
On May 18, aldel reached an agreement with Glencore to supply 180000 tons of aluminum to Glencore in 2020 and 2021, according to the company.
The aldel Delfzijl smelter has about 350 employees.
